This is blackout art done with pages from The Soldier and Death, a novel by Arthur Ransome that was published in 1920. The novel is a retelling of a Russian folk tale of the same name about a former soldier who repeatedly cheats the laws of nature and later suffers the consequences by not being able to die. Since it is more than 70 years old, it is public domain and free to transform. The original scans are from the Internet Archive.

The pages were first converted from PDF to JPG, then I digitally drew over and edited them. Tools used include Clip Studio Paint and a drawing tablet. These pages aren't in chronological order.

[Page 22] - It all started with simple geese.

[Page 3] - "And he thought to himself: All these years I have served the Tzar and had good clothes to my back and my belly full of victuals. And now I am like to be both hungry and cold. Already I've nothing but three dry biscuits."

[Page 18] - Wandering the Earth for eternity is a rather inglorious way to go.
